Danmoore Hotel Documentation
Portland Oregon
The Danmoore is a three-story masonry structure
built in two phases with 'retail' facades on the ground floor and
residential units on the upper floors. The first phase, built in April
1912 as the "Athens" Hotel, occupies the southwest quarter of the
block as a U-shape structure surrounding a light court. The southeast
quarter was built 13 years later in February1925 as a second hotel
with a lobby off of the south facade on SW Morrison Street and mimicking
the earlier building in style and material. The Danmoore Hotel architect,
Carl Linde, was a significant figure in developing Portland architectural
character for multi-story apartment buildings and hotels.
Peter Meijer Architect, LLC was retained to assist First Presbyterian
Church in conducting research, compiling historic data and photographs,
and consultation with the design team providing locations for information
panels on the future site of the removed Danmoore Hotel. In addition,
First Presbyterian requested PMA to go beyond the physical structure
of the Danmoore and research and document the early site history of
First Presbyterian Church and the history of the site prior to the
Danmoore Hotel.
